The water buffalo & the Vietnamese people

The water buffalo & the Vietnamese people
The water buffalo is the traditional symbol of Vietnam. It represents bravery, happiness and prosperity. Buffalos played a very important role in Vietnamese agriculture.

They were a farmer’s most valued possession and were often treated as a part of the family. Buffalos are strong and hard working but also good natured and tame. It is no wonder that the Vietnamese people revere this honest creature, for just like the buffalo they are diligent and earnest in everything they do. The Vietnamese are warm and respectful in all their interactions – be that with business partners, clients or tourists. After only one week, I can see common characteristics among all Vietnamese people: their willingness to learn, their eagerness to please, their diligence, and most of all their sincerity.

I would like to tell you about one great person we had the pleasure of meeting, who I believe is an example of the Vietnamese people. Our tour guide, Vinh, spent the past week with us but earned our admiration only within the first few hours. She went out of her way to teach us, help us and make us feel welcome. She was always prepared for any mishap that could happen and took care of us as one would of her own children. Being our tour guide was not just a job for Vinh, she put her heart and soul into it. On our last day together, she said goodbye to us with tears in her eyes because she had become part of our family. I was touched by her earnestness and inspired to be passionate in all my undertakings.
